South Essex College

South Essex College is the largest provider of technical and vocational education and training for 16-18 year olds, adults and apprenticeship provision within Essex. With an annual turnover of approximately £50m, around 1000 apprentices (pre-Covid) and approximately 10,000 students each year from across the south Essex region, the college provides wide-ranging services to employers, other providers and students.

The college was founded in 1899 as an art school and was renamed later as the Junior Day Technical School, then being restructured to include in its teaching commercial and industrial skills. The college became South East Essex College of Arts and Technology in 1991.

In 2004, the college relocated to the centre of Southend, close to main public transport routes and next to the High Street and mainline railway station. The college formally merged with Thurrock and Basildon College on 1 January 2010 and was renamed South Essex College. Since the merger the College has relocated campuses in Basildon and Thurrock to the respective town centres.

The College has also recently merged with PROCAT (Prospects College of Advanced Technology) in Basildon to widen the technical skills offering and with NCCI (National College of Creative Industries) operating from the Backstage Centre in High House Production Park, Purfleet.

The facilities, training and education on offer across South Essex are excellent and cover every aspect of the vocational curriculum.

University Centre South Essex

South Essex College is formally known as South Essex College of Further and Higher Education. Our degrees and higher education qualifications are awarded by leading institutions, including the University of East Anglia, the University of Arts London, The Open University, Pearson and City & Guilds.

There are over 20 courses on offer allowing students to study locally across South Essex at the Southend or Thurrock Campuses. In addition there are courses available in Purfleet at the Backstage centre in media as well as on the High House production Park in conjunction with the Royal Opera House in costume construction.

The centre has smaller class sizes and more time with tutors than the more traditional HE offer. Students can study courses from Business, Education, Computing, Counselling, Healthcare, Creative Media, Forensics and Criminology, Digital Animation, Early years, Electronics, Sport, Art, Film and TV, Games Design, Performing Arts, Special Education Needs, Design and the costume construction and hair and media make up.
